The city of Campbell River has a long marine history beginning with First Nation tribes that have lived in this area for centuries. Captain James Cook and then Captain George Vancouver explored the surrounding coastline and produced maps, parts of which are still in use today.
Infamous Ripple Rock, responsible for sinking a number of ships, is located only a few mile north of Campbell River. When the top was blown off this navigation hazard in April 1958 it was the largest non-nuclear explosion in the world at that time.
Campbell River was, and still is, home port to many commercial fishing boats. This area, and the Discovery Islands to the east, is internationally known for an abundance of salmon.
The waters off Campbell River are a busy marine highway for all types of marine traffic including tugs, barges, log carriers and cargo ships as well as fishing and recreational craft.
