An old and unique document once used by the Royal Navy when paying off a ship and her crew. All commissioned officers,from lieutenant up to captain were entitled to half pay upon being unemployed when their ship was taken out of service. In order to receive their pay, the navy required them to swear they had not received any pay from other public employment.This deposition is a declaration by Captain Thomas Morton for three months pay in 1811. |

This is the second of two depositions listed that were once used by the Royal Navy. An officer who was receiving half pay ( an early form of Unemployment Insurance)was required to swear he had not worked at any public job during his layoff. The year of this one is 1817 and the captains name is Captain Brian Hodgson. A nice unusual document in good condition and very legible. |
